How to Block Someone on Discord in 2021

calendar1 Last Updated

As in real life, you will not get along with everyone that you meet on Discord. If you share the same server with someone, they can message you without a friend request, and occasionally someone will slide into your DMs with messages you don’t want to read. Or images you don’t want to see… am I right, ladies?

Fortunately, there is a way where you can ensure that you never have to hear from 2Rotten2Win#8734 again. In fact, their messages in your shared server will be hidden from you unless you choose to read them. If this sounds like a breath of fresh air, then this is the post for you. I will teach you how to block from both the desktop app and the mobile app.

How to Block Someone on Discord on Desktop

To block someone from the desktop Discord app, complete the following:

  1. Step 1

Locate the user in a Discord server or in your DMs.

  2. Step 2

Right-click on their name and choose “Block” from the drop-down menu.

  3. Step 3

Click the “Block” button on the confirmation box that appears.

  4. Step 4

Ensure that they are truly blocked by looking at your chatbox. It will say that you cannot send messages to a user that you have blocked.

  5. Step 5

If the user tries to message you in the future, they will receive a message from the Clyde bot stating that they can’t message you to a number of different reasons.

If they send messages in shared Discord severs, they will initially be hidden from you, though you can unlock them to see their contents.

How to Block Someone on Discord from Mobile

If you need to block someone from the mobile app, complete the following:

  1. Step 1

From your DM section, find the person you want to block. Press down on their name until an options menu appears.

  2. Step 2

    Click “Profile” from the menu.

  3. Step 3

From their profile, click the menu icon (three dots) next to their name to open another menu.

  4. Step 4

    Click the “Block” button.

How to Unblock Someone on Discord

If you change your mind in the future and want to hear from a friend again, unblocking someone on Discord is easy enough. Do the following:

  1. Step 1

Find them in your DM’s or locate their profile.

  2. Step 2

Click the “Unblock” button in the message box.

What Happens If You Block Someone on Discord?

If you decide that you need to block someone on Discord, the following things will happen:

  • megaphone

    No More DMs or Calls

Once you have blocked someone on Discord, they will no longer be able to communicate with you in messages or phone calls.

  • magnifying-glass

    No Messages in Shared Servers

If you share the same server with them, you will not be able to see their messages right away. You will be able to see them if you click the “Show message” option on your desktop. To access them on the mobile app, you will need to tap the “Blocked Messages” tab.

That being said, the person you blocked will still be able to read your messages and see you online.

  • profile-male

    Removed Friend

The Discord app assumes that if you block someone, you no longer want to be their friend on Discord. If you ever decide to unblock them, you will have to send them a new friend request.

  • caution

    No More Alerts

The person you blocked will no longer be able to send you any alerts in a shared Discord server. This means that they won’t be able to @ you or ping you in any way.

  • clipboard

They Won’t Know Unless You Tell Them

No notifications will be sent to the person you blocked when you block them. They will only know if you or someone else tells them that you did so or if they try to DM you or ping you on a shared server.

In the event that the person in question is breaking the platform’s terms of service, you may want to report the user to Discord. I hope that learning how to block people will make your Discord experience better overall in the future.
