What is Slow Mode on Twitch?

calendar1 Last Updated

While you are becoming a bigger streamer with more viewers and mostly more chatters, you might want to consider using slow mode in your chat. Slow mode is a setting that allows you to set a limit on how often users can send a message in your chat. In this guide, I will be explaining how to turn this setting on, off but also why and if you should use slow mode.

How to Use Slow Mode on Twitch

Turning on slow mode is fairly easy and there are 3 different ways of going about this. The last way is for all our moderators and streamers who watch their chat from their phones.

Commands

The first way of turning on slow mode is going into your chat and typing the following command.

/slow {seconds}

The seconds between the curly brackets “{ }” is the number of seconds you want to have between each message sent by one user. This can range everywhere between 3 and 120 seconds, which means that if a member sends a message they will have to wait anywhere between 3 seconds and 120 seconds before they can send another message. The 3 and 120 are standard numbers, but you can also always make it longer than 120 seconds if needed.

Mod View

The second way of turning on slow mode takes a few more steps but it’s still really easy to turn on.

  1. Step 1

    Chat sword

When you’re on your channel or any channel you mod for, go to the chat and click on the little sword icon in the bottom right corner.

  2. Step 2

    Modview

This will open up mod view, which will look something like this.

  3. Step 3

    Channel actions

You will have to go to channel actions, which in my case is in the bottom right corner and click on slow mode.

  4. Step 4

    Slow mode

All you have to do now is choose how long you want your slow mode to be and you’re all set to go.

Mobile app

The third and last way to turn on slow mode is on your phone, which you can use if you don’t have access to your desktop or are streaming from your phone.

  1. Step 1

Go to your channel or the channel you are moderating for and go to the chat.

  2. Step 2

    Chat phone

Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner.

  3. Step 3

    Settings phone

Choose “slow mode” from the chat settings.

  4. Step 4

    Slow mode phone

Lastly, choose the number of seconds you would like your slow mode to be and you’re all set.

How to Turn Off Twitch Slow Mode

Just like there are 3 ways to turn it on, there are also 3 ways to turn it off. Most of the steps are the same as turning it on, but I’ll explain how it works.

Command

The first way to turn slow mode off is by using the following command in your chat.

/slowoff

Mod view

The second way of turning off slow mode also takes a few more steps, since it’s done through the mod view from Twitch.

  1. Step 1

    Chat sword (1)

Go to your channel or the channel you’re moderating for and go to their chat and again click on the little sword in the bottom right corner.

  2. Step 2

    Modview (1)

You are now back in mod view.

  3. Step 3

    Channel actions (1)

Go back to your channel actions and choose “slow mode”.

  4. Step 4

    Slow mode (1)

All you have to do now is choose for the “off” option to turn off slow mode and you’re ready to stream again without slow mode.

Mobile app

Once again, the third and last way is on your phone in the app, for when you stream on your phone or just have the chat open on your phone.

  1. Step 1

Go to your channel or the one you are moderating for and go to chat.

  2. Step 2

    Chat phone (1)

Click on the three dots in the bottom right corner.

  3. Step 3

    Settings phone (1)

Choose “slow mode” from the chat settings.

  4. Step 4

    Slow mode phone (1)

Lastly, choose the option “off” to turn off slow mode.

Why Do Streamers Use Slow Mode?

There can be various reasons as to why a streamer would use slow mode in their chat during a stream. These could be the following and of course, these are not all the reasons someone is using the slow mode, but it could be one of the reasons.

  • twitch

    Moderate Chatters

There are a lot of chatters and this way you can make sure there isn’t just one chatter dominating the chat with spam.

  • twitch

    Eliminates Spam

Stops at least a significant amount of spam that could happen.

  • twitch

    Hate Raids

If you receive a hate raid, they can’t continuously send hate messages over and over again and your mods will be able to ban them faster.

  • twitch

    Keep Track of Messages

You would like to catch everyone’s or at least most messages.

Should You Use Slow Mode on Twitch?

Depending on your community and how you feel about it yourself, it can be a good idea to use slow mode. If you notice that members tend to spam in their enthusiasm then turning on slow mode can definitely help to keep at least a bit of control in your chat, only of course if you don’t want any spam. However, if you’re just starting out, it’s not advised to turn on slow mode as it might keep people from chatting in your stream. Which is something you don’t want to happen.

Conclusion

If you ever come to the point of needing to calm down your chat, then turning on slow mode can be a very good option to do so. And now you know how to turn it on or off if it’s ever needed.
