Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Review

calendar1 Last Updated

Summary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

THPS 1 + 2 is the nostalgic remaster of the classic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2. As the title would suggest, this is a skateboarding game in which you’ll have the opportunity to play as a variety of real-life professional skaters and experiment in real-life locations. For those of you returning to the THPS experience, as far as nostalgia goes, it’s cram-packed. Even the soundtrack remains the same!

Review Process

Depth of Gameplay – The game currently has 19 different levels, each with their own unique goals, and also features a very interesting challenges section to advance levels and get new gear. There is also an offline ranked and even an online/split-screen alternative providing months of content! And if that wasn’t enough, once you’ve done everything you can do, go again with another pro or even create your own character.

Enjoyable to Play – Absolutely! Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a great throwback to the classic and is a great introduction to this genre of games for those that didn’t play them the first time round!

Is the Game Good to Stream? As surprising as this was to find for me, yes. This game has been building an audience for over 20 years. Even before the new remastered release, there are channels on Twitch dedicated to getting those ‘sick scores’. Whilst the release is fresh and there are a lot of bigger streamers feeling nostalgic at the moment, I believe this will only help the genre grow even more with the new audience. Just remember to MUTE the music when you go live.

Where Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Could Improve

Though the game is basically flawless, there is always room for improvement. Firstly, although the soundtrack is nostalgic and fits the aesthetic of the game, it will potentially get you a DMCA strike on Twitch. Though the standard procedure for any games with licensed music in them should be to mute the audio, this game includes a feature where you can turn off specific tracks. This feature could have been used to toggle on copyright-free music (or licensed for reuse) and make it safe for streaming.

Though 19 levels are a lot to play through, the title could have benefited from being called just Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and leave room for expansion. There are around 20 individual Tony Hawk’s titles all with unique parks and skaters, it would have been nice and obvious clearing for expansion. This being said who knows? We may see some tracks return in the form of a DLC at a later date.

Another thing that stood out to me was the frame rate of the game. Almost every channel streaming this title has had ridiculous drops in frame rate. Console streams did not see the struggle as much, however, this game really isn’t optimized for PC to stream at this moment.

Should You Stream Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

After looking over the few negatives, the answer really is an easy one… YES! This game has been building an audience for over 20 years and even though that initial release hype has worn off, the community is there and this latest installment is going to keep them invested.

It’s fun to watch, fun to play and with all the game modes, will give you months of content. You could even invite 7 members of your community to join you online for a good old fashioned game of graffiti!
