How to Stream to Discord

calendar1 Last Updated

Originally released in 2015, Discord has been revolutionary for how gamers can interact with each other, even when they are located in various places throughout the world.

Despite offering its users tremendous value as a free app, the platform has continually developed new ways to connect people through voice channels, messaging, and video. One of Discord’s most recent developments is the ability to live stream to a Discord server.

For those of you who would like to stream exclusively to friends or VIP, streaming on Discord is your best bet. It’s easy to set up and doesn’t require you to install additional software. If this is you, then you’ve come to the right place. This post will go over the process of how you can set up live streaming on Discord.

How to Go Live on Discord

Before you start going live on Discord, you will need to have a server where you can go live. This can either be your personal server or any community where you have permission to live stream and screen share. If you have your very own gaming community on Discord, then all the better!

If you’re just starting out, however, you can set up your own server quite easily. Having your own Discord server will make it easier for you to stream whenever you want, without worrying if you have the right permissions to do so. To start your own Discord community for gaming, check out this guide to learn more.

After choosing or creating a server, you can now start going live on Discord by doing the following steps:

  1. Step 1

If you want to stream games, launch the game of your choice. Otherwise, go to the page you wish to share with your friends.

  2. Step 2

    admin screen login

Enter a voice channel on the Discord server where you wish to live stream.

  3. Step 3

    voice connected setting

Click the “Screen” button on the lower left-hand side of the Discord app. You will find it above your avatar and name.

If you already launched the game, Discord might automatically detect it and show it just right above your username.

If that’s the case, simply click on the screen with a video camera icon beside the game title. Customize the resolution in the stream quality settings pop-up window. Take note that only Nitro users can beyond the 720p/15fps/30fps limit.

Then, click the “Go Live” button. Let the video streaming begin!

  4. Step 4

    screen share option

If you don’t see your game, you can click the “Screen Share” button instead.

Select the game or the screen you wish to stream from the pop-up window.

Usually, the reason why your game isn’t shown is because Discord hasn’t detected your game. Games that are on Steam are often automatically detected by the app. But through the screen share option, you can stream anything you want, even non-game windows and apps.

  5. Step 5

    admin screen live

Other people in the channel can now connect to your stream. Let others view your live stream by joining the voice channel where the live stream is on. They will know you are streaming if they see the red “Go Live” button beside your name.

On Mobile Device

You can also go live on the Discord mobile app. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Step 1

    voice channels

Open the Discord app and go to your server’s voice channels.

  2. Step 2

Choose a voice channel to go live in and tap on Join Voice.

  3. Step 3

To enable screen sharing, swipe up on the controls and click on Share Your Screen.

And just like that, you’ll stream your phone’s screen on the voice channel in no time.

Note: You’ll start streaming your entire screen, so disable your notifications so others may not see them.

Also, on mobile, you won’t be able to select a particular screen, app, or game. Discord will livestream everything shown on your phone. Don’t forget to turn off apps not in use, or hide sensitive information.
