How to Stream to Discord

Originally released in 2015, Discord has been revolutionary for how gamers can interact with each other, even when they are located in various places throughout the world. Despite it already offering tremendous value to its users as a free app, the platform has continually developed new ways to connect people through voice, messaging, and video.

One of Discord’s most recent developments is the ability to live stream to a Discord server. This post will go over the process of how you can set it up. 

How to Go Live on Discord

Going live on Discord is as easy as following this simple guide:

  1. Step 1

    If you want to stream a game, launch the game of your choice. Otherwise, go to the page you wish to share with your friends. 

  2. Step 2

    Enter a voice channel on the Discord server where you wish to live-stream. 

  3. Step 3

    Click the “Screen” button in the lower left-hand side of the Discord app. You will find it above your avatar and name. 

  4. Step 4

    From the pop-up window, select the game or the screen you wish to stream.

    Other people in the channel will now be able to connect to your stream. 

How to Add a Game to Discord Go Live

If your game or app isn’t populating, you may need to add it to Discord Go Live. Complete the following:

  1. Step 1

    Click the setting cog next to your name and avatar in the lower left-hand side of the screen. 

  2. Step 2

    Scroll down the left sidebar until you see the “Game Activity” option located under “App Settings”. Click it. 

  3. Step 3

    Choose your game or app from the drop-down menu.

How to Stream on Discord with Your Webcam

To live-chat through streaming on Discord, complete the following:

  1. Step 1

    Enter a voice channel on the Discord server where you wish to live-stream. 

  2. Step 2

    Click the “Video” button in the lower left-hand side of the Discord app. You will find it above your avatar and name. 

  3. Step 3

    Other people in the channel will now be able to connect to your stream. 

How to Change Screens While Discord Streaming

There are two ways that you can change screens while streaming to your friends on Discord. Here is the easiest way:

  1. Step 1

    Click on the “Screen” button that appears above your avatar and name on the lower left-hand corner of Discord. 

  2. Step 2

    Click the “Change Windows” button.

  3. Step 3

    Choose the Window of your choice from the pop-up menu that populates. 

You can also change screens on Discord by hovering over the small window of what you are streaming that sits over your Discord chat, clicking the settings cog, and choosing the “Change Windows” option. 

How to Improve Discord Stream Quality

There are two ways that you can change your Discord stream settings. Here is the easiest way:

  1. Step 1

    Click on the “Screen” button that appears above your avatar and name on the lower left-hand corner of Discord. 

  2. Step 2

    Hover over the “Stream Quality” option, then update your selection. You will need to have Discord Nitro to stream at 1080p or 60 fps.

You can also change your screen settings on Discord by hovering over the small window of what you are streaming that sits over your Discord chat, clicking the settings cog, and choosing the “Stream Quality” option. 

How to Stop Discord Streaming

To end your screen share stream, you will need to click on the X on the stream section or click the “Screen” button in the lower left-hand side of the screen. Choose “Stop Streaming” from the available options.

You can also stop streaming by hovering over the streaming window on Discord chat and click the X to stop streaming or by clicking the settings cog, and choosing the “Stop Streaming” option. 

To end your live video feed, click the “Video” button in the lower left-hand side of your screen. 

How to Watch a Discord Stream

To watch a Discord stream, you will need to do the following:

  1. Step 1

    Go to a voice channel where someone is streaming. 

  2. Step 2

    Click on the streamer’s name, then click “Watch stream” in the box that generates. 

You can also click on “Watch Stream” on the main Discord chat screen.

How Many People Can Watch Your Discord Live Stream?

Discord has set a streaming watch limit of 10 people. This means that 10 people can watch your live-stream at any given time. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Discord has increased the limit to 50 people and has stated it will stay that way until it is no longer “critically needed.”

What is the Resolution of a Discord Stream?

Your Discord streams will be automatically set to 720p and 30fps. If you have Discord Nitro, you can increase it to 1080p/4K and 60fps.
